Blockchain-Based Immunity Passports Could Help Relax Lockdowns
The coronavirus has done what nothing else has been able to do till date. It has managed to stop human activity for the most part. Since the year started, this virus has spread like wildfire. By March, most countries were in lock down mode. The lock down measures have helped slow down infections to an extent. But the economy is taking a huge hit. Can blockchain-based immunity passports help? Some Blockchain development companies think it can.
Vottun, a blockchain company that specializes in the traceability of data on the blockchain, thinks so. To this end, Oracle, the popular computer technology company has partnered with Vottun. The partnership is aimed towards creating a blockchain-based “immunity passport” system. The concept is quite simple and is based on the very fundamentals of blockchain technology. Although blockchain enterprise has yet to come to infusion, this can help bridge the gap.
Blockchain Getting People Back To Work
The immunity passport is exactly as it sounds. It records your immunity status on the blockchain which can be easily checked by anyone. That is the benefit of using a public blockchain. The data can be easily created, securely stored and checked as and when needed with ease. Also, the data would be immutable and so no one would be able to fake their credentials. This would prevent actual healthy people from being infected.
The way the immunity status of a person can be checked is quite simple. You just have to scan their unique QR code with a phone with that capability. But all of this happens securely behind the scenes with the help of cryptography. This has the potential to relax the worldwide lockdown measures to a great extent.
Currently, the fear is that every infected person could infect tens of people. This could create a cascading chain of effects. However, if you take out the infected people from the equation, things can get back to normal. Theoretically, if only healthy people are out and about, there are slim chances of infection.
The only way to be sure that only healthy people are out of their homes, there is a need for reliable and immutable data. That is where Vottun comes in. It is a bold move but one that can help things go back to normal a bit. In fact, their technology is currently being rolled out in Spain. In the US, they are still at the discussion stage. But if Trump’s eagerness to put people back to work is any indication, they might get approval soon. This is purely speculation at this time.
Not Everyone Is Convinced
Many people are sceptical about the concept. They believe that the virus can still spread somehow. Some have even likened it to world war times. To them, the situation seems akin to German soldiers demanding papers. Others are fearful if the data will be used for other purposes.
Until a vaccine is created or a cure is found, these are the only measures that can help tangibly. Though, the government has to be really careful or else things could become worse.
